The Basque Coast & Rioja Wine Circuit

From the roaring Cantabrian surf and smoky charcoal grills of Getaria to the underground 16th-century wine catacombs of Haro.

Traditional pintxos on wooden bar in San Sebastian Basque country

Day 1: The Old Town Pintxo Pilgrimage (Donostia / San Sebastián)

Begin in the Parte Vieja of San Sebastián, universally recognized as the densest culinary square kilometer on Earth. The key to mastering Donostia is the txikiteo: visiting five to six bars in an evening, ordering only the single house specialty (pintxo caliente) at each counter.

Day 2: Coastal Grills & Txakoli Hills (Getaria)

Drive west along the dramatic coastal corniche to Getaria, a medieval fishing village perched on a narrow isthmus. Walk the hillside vineyards overlooking the ocean where high-acid, effervescent Txakoli wine is cultivated.

For lunch, dine street-side at Elkano or Kaia-Kaipe. Here, entire turbots (rodaballo) are clamped into stainless steel fish cages and roasted over open holm-oak charcoal pits, dressed only with sea salt, olive oil, and a splash of Basque vinaigrette.

Day 3: Cider Houses of Astigarraga

Head inland into the apple orchards of Astigarraga to experience a traditional Sagardotegi (Basque Cider House), such as Petritegi or Zapiain. Stand around towering wooden barrels as the master yells "Txotx!", prompting guests to catch streams of tart, unpasteurized cider directly in their glasses, followed by salt cod omelets and coal-grilled beef.

Day 4–5: Rioja Alta & Subterranean Haro

Cross south through the Cantabrian mountain range into the dry, limestone plateau of La Rioja. Base yourself in Haro's historic Barrio de la Estación—the railway district constructed in the 19th century to export wine directly to Bordeaux.
